A medical emergency can happen at any time, day or night. That’s why Papaya’s expert emergency veterinarians are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing a full range of medical and surgical services for ill or injured dogs and cats. 

The emergency services we provide

We offer today’s most advanced resources to diagnose and treat your pet in an emergency, including: 

  • In-house diagnostic imaging to aid in fast, accurate diagnosis 
  • Onsite laboratory for fast diagnosis to speed the time to treatment 
  • Oxygen unit for oxygen-dependent patients
  • Endoscopy to evaluate the GI tract or retrieve a foreign object
  • Surgery performed in state-of-the-art surgical suites
  • Intensive care unit (ICU) for sophisticated monitoring of critically ill patients 
  • Transfusion medicine for pets that need blood products
  • Isolation ward to limit contagion exposure

When to seek emergency care for your pet

Not sure if a trip to the emergency room is necessary? Don’t hesitate to call your nearest Papaya emergency veterinary hospital anytime, day or night. Our experienced staff will help you figure out if it makes sense to bring in your pet for emergency care.

In general, however, it’s smart to seek immediate care if your pet is experiencing: 

  • Birthing issues, such as prolonged labor without delivery 
  • Choking or difficulty breathing
  • Collapse, loss of balance, inability to stand or walk
  • Distended (swollen) abdomen (bloat)
  • Extreme pain characterized by whining, shaking, trouble getting comfortable
  • Gums that are white, gray or blue (instead of their normal pink)
  • Heatstroke (heavy panting, weakness, fever, collapse)
  • Inability to urinate, straining to urinate (particularly in cats), blood in urine
  • Ingesting a foreign object or toxic substances 
  • Unwillingness to eat or loss of appetite
  • Loss of consciousness, disorientation, convulsions or seizures
  • Prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, urine or stool with blood
  • Trauma from a fall or being hit by a vehicle
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
